A Successful Session at EAA 2026!
The session “Tracing ancient farming: isotopic strategies to explore agricultural systems” was successfully held at the EAA Annual Meeting 2026 in Athens.
Bringing together case studies from Asia, South America, and Europe, the session offered a stimulating opportunity to discuss how stable isotope analyses can help reconstruct past agricultural systems and their responses to environmental change.
A great exchange of ideas, perspectives, and research, and an exciting opportunity to share PROTO-GREEN within an international archaeological community!

Fieldwork at Grotta Vittorio Vecchi
PROTO-GREEN took part in the third excavation campaign at Grotta Vittorio Vecchi, coordinated by the Chair of Palethnology (Prof. M.F. Rolfo) at the University of Rome Tor Vergata.
Another exciting season of fieldwork, bringing new discoveries and valuable material for the project’s research.
More to come from the cave!

Session accepted at the EAA Annual Meeting 2026!
The session “Tracing ancient farming: isotopic strategies to explore agricultural systems” has been accepted for the EAA Annual Meeting, taking place in Athens from 26-29 August.
It will focus on the use of stable isotope analyses and interdisciplinary approaches to investigate past agricultural systems.
The session will provide a valuable platform for sharing and discussing research perspectives related to PROTO-GREEN!

Proto-Agricoltura Project
PROTO-GREEN and the P.A.LA.E.O. Lab, in collaboration with CNR IGAG, are working together on an experimental agriculture project.
Ancient varieties of barley, emmer, and wheat were sown to replicate pre-protohistoric farming practices. Part of the harvest will be analyzed to reconstruct soil management strategies, while the rest will be used to replicate ritual practices identified in archaeological contexts.
Results from this experimental phase will be shared soon!

Fieldwork at Grotta Vittorio Vecchi
PROTO-GREEN joined the second excavation campaign at Grotta Vittorio Vecchi, coordinated by the Chair of Palethnology (Prof. M.F. Rolfo) at the University of Rome Tor Vergata.
It was an incredible experience, full of exciting discoveries!
Stay tuned for upcoming results!

First talk about the project!
On July 10th, 2025, PROTO-GREEN was publicly presented for the first time as part of the “TIME Talks” lecture series (Trends, Innovations, Methods, and Excavations in Stone Age Archaeology), organized by the Department of Prehistory at the University of Mainz in collaboration with LEIZA – Leibniz Center for Archaeology.
It was a great pleasure to share the goals and scope of PROTO-GREEN in such an inspiring academic setting!
